It rests at an altitude of 2,000 m (6,600 ft) The Spanish founded this city in the early 16th century and Guanajuato subsequently became the world's leading silver mining region in the 18th century. The architecture is influence by Baroque and neoclassical influnces. Now it has become a college town.
