Code Number: CEIV12P02_12 Title: The Obelisk, St. Peter's Square
Notes: In the year 37 AD this egyptian Obelisk was brought to Rome by Emperor Caligula. The original location was close to the present Sacristy, south of the basilica. In 1586 it was brought to the center of St. Peter's Square. This remarkable obelisk sits on four couchant lions. It also doubles as a sun dial.
