The X-13 was designed to research the practiocality of vertical takeoff and landing by jet aircraft. This X series aircraft was first flown conventionally on December 10, 1955. It was then fitted with a temporary "tail sitting" rig and first flew from a vertical position into hover on May 28, 1956.. Finally on April 11, 1957, it accomplished its first full-cycle flight at Edwards Air Force Base in the desert of California.
