Since 1912, there have been numerous attempts to make a regular automobile fly. Three of the more notable ones are the Waldo Waterman Aerobile of 1937, the Robert Fulton Airphibian of 1947 and the Molt Taylor AEROCAR of 1956. These three were fully developed and earned CAA (now FAA) certification as an aircraft.

In 1949, Moulton B. Taylor created his first AEROCAR, it was a true purpose-built flying car powered by a Lycoming aviation engine that included front-wheel drive for conventional road transportation. This "conventional" car connected to a flight module, which included the wing, rear fuselage, drive shaft and propeller. None of these designers built more than four machines and none attempted to create a production facility. There is no history of marketing flying cars to the public.
