About the Boeing 747 In the 1960's Boeing forecast that commercial aviation would increase at levels never before seen. The 747 was initially designed by Boeing to compete for the large transport competition for the US Air Force. Though Boeing lost the bid to Lockheed, the company decided to go ahead and build a civilian version which became the 747, the largest plane ever built for commercial passenger use. Although the massive size is the most conspicuous feature of this "Jumbo Jet," its shape was greatly determined by the need to efficiently handle container cargo. The flight deck was positioned above the passenger cabin so containers shipped on freighter and convertible versions could be loaded straight in through the nose, which swung upward on a hinge.

The area behind the flight deck was initially used as a lounge, then for seating above the main passenger deck, creating the jetliner's characteristic hump. If you look carefully at the back of this hump you will see a little bump that contains communications equipment.

As carriers broadened their use of the 747, Boeing offered over a dozen different versions. The latest 747-400 incorporates advances in aerodynamics, structural materials, avionics and interior design. The most noticeable aerodynamic improvement is the six-foot-high winglet at the tip of each wing. It first flew on April 29, 1988.

Today Boeing still continues to view the growth potential of this type of aeroplane. The growth varients of the -500 and the -600 have been canceled as of Jan 1997 due to lack of customer response.
As of this writing the new 747-8 and the new freighter version are in production.
