Mushrooms and Fungi were once classified as plants but are now clearly recognized as being in a seperate kingdom. Similar to plants most fungi are not mobile. The main differentiation between plants and fungi is that plants through photosyntesis manufacture their own food and fungi on the other hand feed on living or dead plants, animals, dung and other organic materials, they do not photosynthesize.

Fungi Facts:

* Fungus cells contain a light, strong substance called chitin. Chitin is also found in the cuticle or outer layer of some animals, such as insects.

* Longest living mushroom can live close to fifty years, the Ganoderma applanatum.

* Biggest mushroom so far discovered is Hericium abietis.

* The second biggest fruiting body is the giant puffball which can measure up to 2 meters in circumference.

* Fungi reproduce through spores, which are the equivelent of a plant's seeds.

* There are about 65,000 known species of fungus.

* Never eat wild mushrooms unless they have been identified by an expert as edible.
