Arachnids include the spiders, scorpions, and mites which make up 73,000 known species. Arachnids have eight legs (not six legs like insects) and two body parts instead of three for insects. The largest spider is the Goliath bird-eating spider which can have a leg span of 28 centimeters. The smallest spider is the Western Samoa spider whose web is a mere 10 millimeters wide. House spiders can run as fast as 1.9 km per hour for short periods of time. Most arthropods are very non-caring parents. Spiders and scorpians are the most caring of this phylum. Female scorpians give birth to live young and carry their babies on their back until after their first molt. Our Arachnids pages are seperated by the orders contained in the Animal Class ARACHNIDAE.
