US Coast Guard Fleet Identification

To Purchase this 8.5 by 11 inch durable, double sided laminated chart titled:

U.S. Coast Guard Fleet Identification at a Glance©

please call 410-337-8033, or fax 410-337-8233

To help underwstand and define basic US Coast Guard nomenclature, the laminated charts above are available for purchase.

The U.S. Coast Guard defines a "Cutter" as a vessel over 65 foot in length, having crew accommodations for extended operations. Rather then listing "Cutters" alphabetically or by hull number, "Cutters" are listed by Homeport within the vessel class. This listing begins in Maine on the Atlantic Ocean, through the Gulf of Mexico hence to Southern California through Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and eastward following a contiguous shoreline from Lake Superior through Lake Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario. This Arrangement allows the reader to locate individual "Cutters" within a particular area of interest.

Specific missions such as national defense, environmental protection, fisheries policing, and law enforcement determine the design and construction of all "Cutters", predicated on sea conditions within territorial waters or upon the open seas. All US. Coast Guard Cutters working in conjunction with Coast Guard Station small boats, and Coast Guard Aviation are uniquely capable of providing Search & Rescue operations whenever, and whereever the need arises, as demonstrated by recent events in July of 1999 off Martha's Vineyard.
Vessel in red indicates projected new construction and anticipated date of commissioning. All dates for new construction, homeport changes and decommissioning should be considered as long term projection. The U.S. Coast Guard's mission and requirements are ever changing and extremely demanding of its equipment, therefore the future assignment of its "Cutters" will reflect these changes as more capable new vessels enter service.

On April 1, 1967 the US Coast Guard became part of the Department of the Transportation after 177 years within the U.S. Treasury Department. The present Coast Guard traces its origin it the original ten "Fleet of Cutters" of the Revenue Cutter Service authorized by the US Congress on August 4, 1790. During the intervening years U.S. Coast Guard evolved from the consolidation of the Revenue Cutter Service, Life Saving Service (1915) Lighthouse Service (1939) and Bureau of Navigation & Steamboat Inspection (1942). The U.S. Coast Guard is "At all times an armed force of the United States." During times of war, or by presidential decree, the Coast Guard would become operationally part of the U.S. Navy, within the Department of Defense.

Aircraft and helicopters belonging to the Canadian Coast Guard (which in Canada is a civilian organization) are painted red in a similar colour scheme to Canadian Coast Guard ships. In the Canadian Air Force, aircraft and helicopters belonging to a Transport and Rescue squadron are painted a bright yellow/orange and not the standard "military grey". Some people may confuse these Canadian Air Force Squadrons as Coast Guard.
