Military Aircraft- -US Coast Guard: Sikorsky HH-52 Sea Guardian, Images by Wernher Krutein and PHOTOVAULT®

Coast Guard squadrons operated the HH-52 as a search and rescue (SAR) helicopter, a role for which it proved to be well suited because of certain design features. Chief among these was that the HH-52 was fully amphibious and that the main wheels retracted into pontoons located forward on both sides of the fuselage. The helicopter also employed a folding platform along the side of the fuselage and a winch above the door, both of which facilitated helicopter rescue. Ordered in 1962 as a replacement for the HH-34, the HH-52 was a variant of the Sikorsky S-62 helicopter which had proven to be highly successful in the civilian sector as the first turbine rotorcraft to ever be granted certification for commercial use.
