By the late 70's and early 80's it became apparant to the US Army that the venerable
Jeep
was no longer suitable for the many requirments of this utility vehicle.
The US Army sent out an RFP for a vehicle that would not only replace the Jeep, but many other vehicles currently in the Army inventory from utility transports to light combat capable vehicles. Some of the specifications required a vehicle that had high ground clearance, forward visibility, low silhouette, minimum weight and superior mobility in a tactical field environment. After an extended test period by the US Army and the US Marine Corps, the HMMWV was selected by the Army over two competitors.
On March 22, 1983 the U. S. Army Tank-Automotive & Armaments Command awarded the AM General Division of LTV Aerospace and Defense (presently AM General Corporation) a $1.2 billion contract to deliver 55,000 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV, pronounced Humvee®). The five year contract would require this versatile vehicle to be produced in 15 configurations.
Known officially as the M998 Series and nicknamed the HUMMER®, this phenomenal vehicle, whose body consists entirely of aluminum, weighs in at a mere 1 1/4-tons. It can easily negotiate rivers and water up to 60 inches deep. It deftly handles extremes from the desert heat to Arctic cold.
The original M998 had a 6.2 liter V-8 diesel engine with a 25-gallon fuel tank giving it a 300 mile range without refueling. It weighed in at close to 5,200 lbs. and has a payload of 2,500 lbs. It can accelerate from 0-30 mph in eight seconds. The most recent configuration of the HMMWV has a 6.5 liter V-8 diesel engine. It weighs 5,900 lbs., and can carry a payload of 4,400 lbs.
The HMMWV is amazingly light and compact. The versatility and ease of transport has made the HMMWVs easy to deploy. Six HMMWVs can fit into the
C-141B Starlifter
and 15 HMMWVs in the
C-5A Galaxy
. The HMMWVs can be delivered by the Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System so that the delivery aircraft is not required to land. In highly rigourous tactical battelfield conditions, two HMMWVs can hang from a
CH-47 Chinook
or a
CH-53 helicopter
, while one can be slung from a
UH-60A Blackhawk
.
Armament for the HMMWV can include 7.62 mm and .50 caliber machine guns, and the MK 19 40 mm grenade launcher. The weapons carrier version of the HMMWV has an anti-tank TOW missile system.
AM General manufactures the HMMWV in Mishawaka, Indiana. Since production began in 1985, more than 150,000 of these remarkable vehicles have been sold to the U.S. Armed Forces and over 30 other friendly nations.
