This rugged aircraft, based on the P-36 fighter, was ordered into production in 1938 as an interim stop-gap while the F-38 and P-39 were still under development. Encumbered by its ruggedness and underpowered, it never-the-less was flown sucessfully by the American Volunteer Group (AVG). The Flying Tigers were the first American aviators to engage the Japanese in China prior to the entry of the United States into WWII. The P-40's superior firepower, weight and armor were used to great advantage against the Japanese. The P-40 was the only American aircraft to still be in production at the end of the war that was in production before the war.
