The F-80 was the first US aircraft to exceed 500 mph. The first jet-to-jet air-to-air victory was credited to it. Russell Brown flying an F-80 against a Mig-15.
For a short time the F-80 was the United States front line fighter, but the straight edge wing was already obsolete and the swept wing for fighters soon became the standard. The real value of this type was realised when 128 TF-80Cs were redesignated TF-33A's in 1949 and production of the
T-33
soon eclipsed that for the F-80.
