T
he brain has three main regions: the brain stem, which merges with the spinal cord; the
cerebellum
; and the
cerebrum
, which contains the
two cerebral hemispheres
. The cerebrum makes up 90% of the brain. The brain is proteced by the
skull
, which encases it, and the cerebrospinal flu, which cushions it.
The brain sends and receives messages as impulses of electrical energy. The energy travels via nerve cells, called neurons, that run down the spinal cord to the rest of the body. Each neuron ends in a network of fine branches.

~A typical adult human brain weighs about 1.3kg (3lb).
~About 0.85 liters (1.8 pints) of blood travel through the brain every minute.
~A human brain contains about fifteen billion cells.
