Included in the Vault are images of:
St. John's Roman Catholic Church
(Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist) 802 N. Jackson St. This cathedral was built in 1847. Architect is Victor Schulte, and the new tower is by Ferry & Clas. This is one of Milwaukees oldest churches, the original construction had a substantially shorter tower. The tower you see in these pictures were added in 1892. A fire destroyed most of the building in 1935. St. John's Roman Catholic Church is across the street from Cathedral Square, which used to be called Courthouse Square over one hundred years ago when the Courthouse was located adjacent to the square.
Wisconsin Gas Building
626 E. Wisconsin Ave. 1930. This building used to be named the Milwaukee Gas Light Co. If you look closely "MGL" can be seen in the metal spandrels on the building.This great Art Deco design was created by Eschweiler & Eschweiler. The first two and a half stories have a faced of granite.
A unique feature to this building is the lighted "
weather flame
". This flame is used to indicate weather predictions; BLUE- No change in view. GOLD- Cold, RED- Warm weather predicted, Flashing- means rain is anticipated.
Basilica of St. Josaphat
601 W. Lincoln Ave. 1901. Basilica of St. Josaphat was designed by architect Erhard Brielmeier. It seats 2400 parishinors making it the Milwaukees largest church. The distinctive dome is on of the largest domes in the wold. It was built from the demolished Chicago Post Office in 1901. 200,000 tons of material were used from the Chicago Post Office rubble.
