The Chicago Stock Exchange

The Chicago Stock Exchange (CHX) opened for trading on May 15, 1882. The initial list of securities (82 bonds and 52 stocks) was highly concentrated on regional issues, including Chicago Gas Light & Coke Company (now Peoples Energy) and First National Bank of Chicago. Many railroad companies became early listings as Chicago became the rail hub of the United States.

In 1908, the Chicago Stock Exchange was located at the famous Rookery building on LaSalle Street. Later the Exchange outpaced the available space at this location.

In 1949, The Chicago Stock Exchange merged with the exchanges in St. Louis, Cleveland, and Minneapolis-St. Paul to form the Midwest Stock Exchange. The New Orleans Stock Exchange joined a decade later. The support of the business and financial communities in these cities continues to be vital to the Exchange.

On July, 8 1993, the Exchange returned to its original name, reflecting its roots and building on the unique identity that Chicago has established in the world of financial trading. This re-dedication represents the Exchange's commitment to meeting the diverse needs of listed companies and the securities industry. The ongoing efforts of the CHX are directed toward providing customers with the highest-quality execution of orders, competitive pricing and
cost-effective services.

Today, The Chicago Stock Exchange has more than 4000 issues available for trading. 1998 was a record breaking year with over 9 billion shares traded and 16 million trades executed. The total value of these transactions, over $298 billion, solidified the Exchange's position as the second-largest exchange in the U.S.
