About this snake: Picado Pitviper

This species occurs at low and moderate elevations in Costa Rica and western Panama. It appears to be restricted to the Atlantic drainage except in the Cordillera de Tilaran and the mountains surrounding the Valle Central. In Panama it is found only in the extreme northwestern portion of the country. The vertical distribution ranges from about 50 to a little over 1500 m. The picado pitviper is found in subtropical, tropical, and mountainous moist and wet forests. It is a snake that is found in a variety of habitats over a wide range, however, it is not common anywhere.

The picado pitviper is a very thick-bodied snake, although it is not quite as thick as its close relative, P. nummifer. The picado pitviper will often reach 750mm in overall length and at times it exceeds 1m. The top of the head is typically dark brown or auburn and it is not uncommon to see irregular darker brown markings as well.
